On a memorable Rizal Day, December 30, 2023, I found myself in front of the Jose Rizal monument in Canada, a certificate in hand, awarded by a Member of Parliament and the Philippine Consulate General in Calgary. This certificate recognized my efforts in championing the ideals and teachings of Jose Rizal. More than a personal award, this moment symbolized a collective success, celebrated by the Filipino communities in Canada and beyond. It highlighted profound humility and the real value of action over titles.
On the eve of his execution, Rizal made a final, profound gesture to the world by transforming an ordinary lamp into a significant symbol, concealing within it "Mi Ultimo Adios," a poem embodying his hopes, dreams, and steadfast love for his country. The following day, blindfolded and turned away from his executioners, Rizal echoed the last words of Jesus Christ, "Consummatum Est!" (It is finished!), just before the firing squad executed him, even as he faced unjust accusations. This act of defiance and dignity, in the shadow of death, cemented his legacy as a beacon of hope and resilience for his fellow countrymen.
Receiving the Jose Rizal certificate has made me even more dedicated to the values Rizal stood for, such as progressive education, kindness, and community involvement. This honour reminds us that we can be leaders of change, making our communities brighter and more hopeful. Rizal's story inspires me to contribute positively, not just here in Canada but all around the world. Today, we wield kindness as our weapon, just as Rizal used his writing in his time. By performing simple acts of kindness every day, we combat the negativity that seems so pervasive now. Seeing the contrast between life here and in less fortunate countries has deepened my appreciation for what we have. This sense of gratitude empowers us to address significant issues like education, climate change, and food insecurity.
In conclusion, receiving the Jose Rizal certificate has inspired me to champion kindness, education, and civic engagement, reflecting Rizal's enduring legacy. I envision a future where the Filipino community, both in Canada and worldwide, leads by example, with the youth pivotal in keeping Rizal's spirit relevant. As we strive for positive change, let's unite in our actions and beliefs, embodying the modern Rizal to inspire transformative change globally. This journey towards a brighter future is a testament to the values I've been honoured to uphold through the award, aiming to illuminate the world with the true essence of Rizal's teachings.
